Brief History of Arcadis

The existence of Arcadis can be traced to the establishment of Nederlandsche Heidemaatschappij, a firm that specialises in the reclamation of land. The company was founded in 1888. The firm was involved in agricultural and environmental practices such as forestry and irrigation. In 1972, the company was divided into a couple of separate entities - Heidemij and Association. The former became the commercial division of the company, while the latter carried on with the firm's agricultural activities. In 1993, the firm agreed to a merger deal with Geraghty & Miller and the newly created company was named Arcadis. This company was listed on the Nasdaq Index and gained a presence in the North American continent.

In mid-2005, Arcadis purchased Axtell Yates Hallett, a British surveying company, and rebranded it as Arcadis UK. This newly acquired company expanded its service offerings by adding facilities consultancy, project management, and building surveying. The firm gained renown for its work on the Emirates Stadium. In late 2011, Arcadis acquired EC Harris, an asset consultancy specialist. In 2014, the company acquired Hyder Consulting, a design consultancy firm. The firm also purchased Callison, an architecture company. In 2020, Arcadis bought Oven Morgen and also acquired EAMS Group later that year. In late 2022, Arcadis purchased DPS Group, an Irish construction consultancy firm.

Culture & Vibe

The company is founded on the strength of five core values, namely:

  • People First (caring for each other and creating a safe and secure environment where people can feel respected, thrive, and perform)
  • Client Success (the company cares about the success of its clients and aims always to offer value)

  • Sustainability (making decisions with environmental responsibility as well as socio-economic advancement in mind)
  • Collaboration (they value the power of diversity and their collective capabilities in achieving excellence).
