The Barclays Story

Barclays Bank has a very old history that goes as far back as 1690. Two goldsmith bankers, John Freame and Thomas Gould, began doing business in London. In 1736, Joseph Freame, John Freame's son, partnered with James Barclay, his brother-in-law. That was a defining point for the business because the name "Barclay" became a fixture in the business since then.

In 1776, the firm was rebranded as Barclay, Bevan and Bening. The company's name changed in 1785 with the introduction of another partner, John Tritton. After marrying Barclay and joining the firm, the company rebranded to Barclay, Bevan, Bening, and Tritton. In 1896, many British banks joined under the name Barclays and Co. The company grew in size and influence. In the early 20th century, the bank acquired small banks. The company also expanded its network across Europe.

In 2004, Barclays Bank took over the sponsorship of the Premier League. Fast forward to today, the bank has established itself as one of the largest banks in Europe and the world.
