Brief History of Taylor Wimpey

Taylor Wimpey was established as Taylor, Woodrow Limited in 1921 by Frank Taylor, a 16-year old teenager. He got a loan to construct two houses in Blackpool, but because he was underage, Woodrow, his uncle, loaned him his name for the business. In the 30s, the company diversified into general construction by building temporary hospitals. The Homes division of the firm made up just a small portion of the business. With the sales of homes declining for the next 50 years, the firm constructed a maximum quota of 600 houses annually. In 2001, Taylor Woodrow purchased Bryant Group, a Birmingham-based business, for £556 million.

In 2003, the firm purchased Wilson Connolly for £499 million via a cash and shares deal. In the 70s, George Wimpey became the biggest private house building firm in the U.K and it decided to push its Homes division as a brand that concentrates on small housing. In 2018, George Wimpey started buying the operations of Taylor Woodrow Construction. The company was renamed Taylor Wimpey. In 2011, its American and Canadian house construction was acquired by a property investment conglomerate with the backing of private equity firms. As of today, Taylor Wimpey has several offices across England, Scotland, and Wales as well as a growing workforce.
