Brief History of Virgin Media

Virgin Media came into existence in early 2006 thanks to a merger deal between NTL and Telewest. These companies started working on their merger deal towards the end of 2003. Before then, they had a cordial relationship and supported each other by referring prospective customers. Their merger created one of the biggest media firms in the UK. The newly created company owned about 90% of the UK cable market, making it the largest cable provider in the country. The company was named NTL incorporated. At the time, former NTL shareholders owned 75% of the company's stock, while former Telewest shareholders owned 25% of the company's stock.

When the company acquired Virgin Mobile in 2006, it became the pioneer "quadruple play" media firm. This meant that the company offered mobile phones, fixed-line telephone services, internet, and television services. Part of the takeover deal was a branding agreement that was valid for three decades. The terms of the branding agreement include NTL adopting "Virgin" after merging with Telewest. The company then announced that it would rebrand to Virgin Media Inc. 7 years later, Virgin Media Inc was listed on the London Stock Exchange and NASDAQ Stock Market. That same year, this company became a subsidiary of Liberty Global. In 2020, Liberty Global had an agreement with Telefonica to merge Virgin Media with O2.
