Brief History of Sony

Sony emerged into existence during the Second World War. A Japanese electronics dealer, Masaru Ibuka, opened a shop in Shirokiya, Tokyo, in 1946. He started the business with a modest capital of 190,000 Japanese Yen (£1,138). The business has just eight employees. Later that year, he and Akio Morita co-established a company known as Tokyo Tsushin Kogyo, a Telecommunications Engineering firm. This company is responsible for Type-G, the first tape recorder in Japan. In 1958, the company rebranded to Sony. The company found immense success when it launched its RR-63 Radio and gained ground in the American market. This birthed a new wave of consumer electronics. In 1960, Morita established the Sony Corporation of America. Between the 60s and 90s, Sony played a key role in making Japan a renowned exporter.

Thanks to its quality of products, Sony made the world respect products made in Japan. Sony developed the compact disc in the 70s and 80s. In the 90s, they even found more success with the development and launch of the Playstation. In 1989, the company acquired Columbia Pictures, gaining a foothold in the movie industry. In 2016, the company restructured its American operations and merged its gaming business, Sony Interactive Assessment, with its movie business, Sony Pictures Entertainment.

In 2019, Sony merged its camera, mobile, and television businesses. In 2021, Sony Corporation rebranded to Sony Group Corporation. This company came to the UK in 1968.
