It was established as a subsidiary firm of Burmah Oil Company focused on oil discoveries in Iran. Lord Strathcona became the first chairman and minority shareholder of this newly incorporated company. The first refinery was built in 1912 and commenced operations that same year. Two years later, the British government acquired roughly 50% stake in the company. Anglo-Persian Oil Company acquired British Petroleum in 1916. In 1923, Anglo-Persian gained exclusive rights to Persian Oil Resources. This company was later rebranded to Anglo-Iranian Oil Company. In 1954, this company was renamed the British Petroleum Company. The firm acquired a 40% stake in Iranian Oil Participants Ltd. In the 60s, the company gained renown for taking the most daring risks in the industry. This earned the company a lot of revenue, but it also
suffered significant setbacks. The company has been on a spree of strategic partnerships
and acquisitions worldwide.
