Brief History of Visa

The origin of this company dates to 1958, when the Bank of America introduced its credit card program in California. The bank mass-mailed thousands of unsolicited credit cards to the American populace. It was the first successful attempt at the creation of an all-purpose card. Previous attempts were carried out by smaller banks. In the 60s, the BOA licensed the card program to other banks in other countries to issue cards with their brand names. In 1970, the BOA was no longer in control of its card program. The other banks issuing the card assumed control of the program and created  National BankAmericard Inc., a  Delaware-based firm that will manage, promote, and develop the card system within the states.

The different localised names of the card were united under the name "Visa" in 1976, and National BankAmericard Inc was renamed Visa USA. The name was believed to attract universal acceptance and be recognisable in several languages worldwide. Visa has grown to become one of the leading card issuers and payment organisations globally, with a workforce of more than 26,000 employees across the world. When Russia invaded Ukraine this year, Visa suspended all its operations in the country.
