Brief History of Twitter

Twitter was established in a long brainstorming session by board members of Odeo, a podcasting firm. Jack Dorsey, a student of New York Varsity then suggested using an SMS service to connect with a small group of individuals. In early 2006, this idea took shape, and Dorsey published the first tweet that same month. The first prototype of the social media service served as an internal communication platform for employees of Odeo. In July, the public version of Twitter was released. In October, Dorsey, Evan Williams, Biz Stone and others established Obvious Corporation and purchased Odeo and its assets, including the podcast service and Twitter, from the current investors/shareholders. In 2007, Twitter became its own company. The company gained popularity that same year thanks to the South by Southwest Interactive Conference.

Shortly after the conference, there was an improvement in Twitter usage, and the number of daily tweets tripled. In 2012, Twitter announced its intention to establish an office in Detroit to collaborate with advertising agencies and automotive manufacturers. The company also established an office in Dublin. In late 2012, Twitter hit a monthly active user base of 200 million people. The following year, the company had its IPO and was listed on the New York Exchange. In 2017, Twitter reinvented its dashboard to improve user experience on the platform. In 2022, Elon Musk acquired Twitter and made it a private company.
