Brief History of THG

THG is a Gen-Z company. Its young history dates back to 2004. The company was established as The Hut Group in Manchester thanks to an investment of £500,000 by John Gallemore and Matt Moulding. The company started out by selling DVDs and CDs digitally. Later, it created white-label digital stores for established brick-and-mortar retail stores such as Tesco, Asda, and WHSmith. The company ran a warehouse in Guernsey, which enabled its customers to make purchases without paying VAT on the price of goods. The emergence of the iPhone in 2007 triggered the company to start purchasing digital retail outlets and integrating them with its existing structure and warehouses.

In 2009, THG acquired Zavvi. A year later, it acquired Lookfantastic. In 2011, the company purchased Myprotein. The company's focus was beauty and lifestyle products, thanks to large margins and other key factors. In 2017, Old Mutual Global Investors injected their first private equity investment into THG. That same year, the company hit a valuation of £2.5 billion. This made it one of the most valuable brands in the UK, as well as one of the few unicorn companies in the country. In 2020, THG was listed on London Stock Exchange in what was described as the biggest IPO since 2013.
