Brief History of Thames Water

The origin of Thames Water traces back to the construction of the New River, which lasted between 1609 and 1612. The New River Company, which was founded in 1619, was in charge at the time. In 1904, the New River Company and several water companies were placed under the ownership of the Metropolitan Water Board. Sixty-nine years later, the powers of the board were transferred to Thames Water Authority. In 1989, the National River Authority took over the responsibility for river and channel management, navigation, and regulation. What remained of the Thames Water Authority was privatised and renamed Thames Water Utilities Ltd.

Thames Water was listed on the London Stock Exchange shortly after its privatisation. RWE, a German company, acquired Thames Water in 2001. Five years later, RWE sold off the British operations of Thames Water to Kemble Water Holdings Ltd for £8 billion while it retained ownership of its international operations. In 2012, Thames Water was a tier-3 sponsor of the London Summer Olympics. As of now, Thames Water generates about 2 billion pounds in revenue annually.
