The Procter & Gamble Story

This company traces its origins to 1837 when William Procter and James Gamble, who were brothers-in-law, became partners and decided to start a company in Cincinnati. The company gradually achieved success, and by 1858, the company had already achieved sales worth $1 million. The company had around 80 employees. At the time, the company was producing candles and soaps. When the American Civil War broke out, Procter & Gamble won a huge contract to supply the Union Army with candles and soaps, and this gained them nationwide recognition. P&G started constructing factories in other locations within the country due to the rising demand for their products.

The company also diversified its product catalogue. In 1930, the company started expanding internationally by purchasing Thomas Hedley & Co. in Newcastle. The company launched its inaugural detergent, Tide, in 1946. The following year, the company introduced Prell, its pioneer shampoo, into the market. In 1961, the company launched its world-renowned pampers, a disposable diaper that eventually became arguably the most popular diaper globally. In 2005, the company launched Gillette, another hugely successful product. In 2014, Procter & Gamble was already a conglomerate with 165 brands. However, the company dropped 100 and retained 65 of those brands. Today, Procter & Gamble is arguably the largest consumer goods company in the world.
