Brief History of Experian

Experian's roots began in the early 19th century. The company was established in 1996. It was formerly known as TRW information systems and services Inc in 1968. Experian’s headquarters is in Dublin, Ireland. The firm has core operations in 37 countries and offices in Brazil, the United Kingdom, and the United States. The history of Experian dates back to 1826 when a group of English tradesmen formed a society called "The Manchester Guardian Society".

This group shared information about customers who failed to settle their debts. In the 1960s, a British retail conglomerate GUS (Great Universal Stores), created the largest credit database in the United Kingdom and eventually acquired the Manchester Guardian Society, which is the present Experian UK. In 1991, the parent company of Experian gave a flawed report which indicated that 1,400 residents of Vermont were defaulting on Thor property taxes. This report negatively affected their credit scores. This is one of the primary reasons that triggered the FCRA amendment in 1996.

In 2015, Experian uncovered a breach of data. Several million clients were affected by this, including T-Mobile customers that had credit checks run on them by Experian. In late 2017, Experian made a significant acquisition. The company purchased Clarity Services. This is a strategic move because it gave Experian access to alternative consumer information. Though there were subsequent data breaches in 2020 and 2021, Experian put a stop to them.
