Brief History of Dior

The origin of this fashion brand dates back to 1946 in Paris though the official opening year of the House of Dior is 1947. The company had the backing of Marcel Boussac, a wealthy French businessman. Initially, Dior was invited to design for Phillipe et Gaston, but he refused and preferred to launch his brand instead. Dior became part of Boussac’s vertically integrated textile operations. The company had a workforce of 80 employees. Dior earned a non-controlling stake in the firm, which was impressive given Broussac’s ruthless reputation. In early 1947, Christian Dior launched his pioneer fashion collection for Spring-Summer 1947.

Dior took the perfume industry by storm when it launched Miss Dior Parfum, which was named after Christian Dior’s sibling. This perfume gained massive financial success for the company. The company started expanding in 1949 with the establishment of a Christian Dior Boutique in New York. Dior became so successful that by the end of the year, Dior fashions made up 75% of the fashion outfits exported from France, as well as 5% of the country's total revenue from exports. In the 50s, Dior had already built a respected fashion empire. In 1985, Bernard Arnault took over the leadership of the company. Dior presented a fashion collection in London in 1950.
