Deloitte's history dates back to 1845 when William Welch Deloitte started his practice in
London. He was recognized as the first individual to serve as an external auditor for the
Great Western Railway. Thirty-five years after establishing his practice in London, he
expanded to New York by opening an office there. In 1890, Deloitte opened a branch on the
famed Wall Street. Subsequently, branches were opened in Buenos Aires and Chicago. In 1898, Griffiths, one of the managers of the Wall Street branch, returned to London to become a partner.
