The Deloitte Story

Deloitte's history dates back to 1845 when William Welch Deloitte started his practice in
London. He was recognized as the first individual to serve as an external auditor for the
Great Western Railway. Thirty-five years after establishing his practice in London, he
expanded to New York by opening an office there. In 1890, Deloitte opened a branch on the
famed Wall Street. Subsequently, branches were opened in Buenos Aires and Chicago. In 1898, Griffiths, one of the managers of the Wall Street branch, returned to London to become a partner. Before its merger in 1972, Deloitte was called Deloitte, Plender, Griffiths & Co. It merged with Haskins & Sells, and the new company was named Deloitte Haskins & Sells. Seventeen years later, this merged firm entered into another merger deal with Touche Ross and was named Deloitte & Touche. The merger was opposed by Haskins & Sells and some member firms of Touche Ross. In 1995, the partners of Deloitte and Touche decided to rebrand to Deloitte & Touche Consulting Group to involve other member firms in the merger effectively. Deloitte made a series of strategic acquisitions and expanded its network globally. One of its most recent acquisitions is Etan, a Northern Irish data and digital transformation specialist firm.

The challenge of the work alone is enough to unite them and put all hands on deck. Deloitte has a policy of diversity which makes it an equal-opportunity employer to workers regardless of their gender, sexuality, social background, religion, race, etc.
