Brief History of BUPA

The history of this company goes back to the 20th century, 1947 precisely. BUPA is short for British United Provident Association, which is a merger of seventeen British provident associations to offer healthcare services to the public. The firm was structured to be a private limited company by guarantee, with no stakeholders. The firm first started by offering health insurance services to various kinds of organisations. Later, the company diversified into healthcare by owning and running private hospitals, outpatient clinics, dental centres, and aged care centres. The company provided health assessments and GP services. In 1971, BUPA started expanding beyond the UK and established an operation in Malta.

In 1976, the company started a health insurance branch in Hong Kong. In 1989, BUPA acquired the second biggest healthcare insurance company in Spain, Sanitas' SA de Seguros. Since then, the purchased company has expanded to incorporate aged care, dental, and clinical services. In the 90s, the company established health insurance operations in Thailand and Ireland. In the UK, BUPA purchased 200 homes through Care First Group and Community Nursing Homes, Goldsborough Healthcare Group, marking its diversification into care homes. In 2007, BUPA sold its UK hospitals to Spire Healthcare. In 2010, the company launched a collaboration with Max India Ltd. In 2016, BUPA purchased Care Plus in Brazil. Today, the firm has more than 84,000 employees across over 11 countries.
