Brief History of British Airways

British Airways came into existence in 1972. It initially served as a board managing British European Airways and British Overseas Airways Corporation, as well as Cardiff-based Cambrian Airways and Newscastle-based Northeast Airline. Within the first two years, the individual branding of the airlines, as mentioned above, was maintained. Still, the British Airways board eventually unified its brands under its name and became an airline in 1974. The airline started flying to the US in mid-1976, with its first US-bound flight heading for Washington’s Dulles Airport and the second for New York’s JFK Airport later that year. In 1981, the British government made a move to privatise the airline to make its operations profitable.

When the airline was eventually privatised in 1987, it grew to become one of the most profitable airlines in the world. That same year, the airline became a publicly traded company and was listed on the London Stock Exchange. The company acquired British Caledonian in July. In 2010, British Airways merged with Iberia airlines. British Airways became the official airline affiliate of the 2012 London Olympic Games. The COVID-19 pandemic was a bad time for the company, and the airline made plans to lay off 12,000 workers, but the cabin crew union moved against it.
