Brief History of AXA

AXA has an ancient history that dates back to the 19th century. The company was established in France as Mutuelle de L'assurance contre L'incendie. In the 20th century, precisely in 1978, this company purchased Compagnie Parisienne de Garantie to become Mutelle Unies. Three years later, the company agreed to a merger deal with Drouot Group to form Mutelle Unies/Drouot Group. It wasn't until 1985 before the company rebranded and adopted the name "AXA.” Six years later, this company purchased The Equitable, American financial services and insurance company. In 1996, AXA purchased the largest insurance company in France and bought Union des Assurances De Paris to form AXA-UAP.

Three years later, it re-adopted AXA as its name. That same year, the company acquired Royal Guardian Exchange. The following year, AXA completely took over Sun Life & Provincial Holdings and made the firm one of its subsidiaries. The firm continued its acquisitions in 2006 when it purchased Winterthur Group from Credit Suisse. As of 2011, AXA rose to the position of the second most influential international corporation in the area of corporate control over global financial stability. As of 2021, AXA had a global workforce of more than 149,000 employees across several countries.
