The rich history of this company dates back to the 17th century with the establishment of the Hand in Hand Fire & Life Insurance Society in London. This firm was created from the merger of two British Insurers, CGU Plc and Norwich Union, in early 2002. The newly merged company was named CGNU but rebranded to Aviva in mid-2002. Soon after, this new name became the uniform brand name for many of the company's operations. The company acquired Abeille Vie, a French Life Insurer.

In 2006, Aviva purchased AmerUs, a financial services firm based in Des Moines, a move that strongly established the company’s presence in the United States. In late 2009, Aviva decided to focus on commercial insurance. 2012 was marked by the company’s intention to sell off sixteen of its auxiliary businesses to boost shareholders' dividends and simplify its activities. The company also announced that it would lay off 800 employees as part of the reorganization activity. In 2021, Aviva sold its French businesses to Aema Groupe. Today, Aviva has a Global workforce comprising more than 22,000 employees and a customer base of about 18 million clients.
