The ASOS Story

This company has a young history. It came into existence when Nick Robertson, Quentin Griffiths, Deborah Thorpe, and Andrew Regan joined forces to create the company in 2000. In 2003, the company's shareholders unanimously agreed to change the company's name from AsSeenOnScreen Holdings PLC and AsSeenOnScreen Limited to ASOS.com Ltd and ASOS PLC. The following year, the company reported huge sales and launched its brand of female clothing later that year. 2005 was a bad year because the business had to shut down because of the Buncefield Fuel Depot explosion temporarily. The temporary closure of the business made them incur losses to the tune of £5 million.

The company eventually resumed operations and started recovering its losses gradually. In 2008, the company launched kids' clothing in its online store. This venture wasn't a success because of the decline in offers for kids' clothing. Two years later, ASOS dumped the venture to focus exclusively on the production and selling of clothes for the young adult market. Later that year, ASOS launched into the international market by opening three shops in the U.S, Germany and France. During the Covid-19 pandemic, ASOS announced that it would not charge commissions on the transactions of small-scale retailers as a way of providing support.
