Arm was established in late 1990 as Advanced RISC Machines. It was founded as a joint venture among three tech companies, namely Apple, Acorn Computers, and VSLI Technology. Apple provided the funds for the start-up, Acorn provided the human resources, and VSLI provided the tools needed to get the new company up and running. The purpose of this new venture was to enhance the development of the Acorn RISC Machine Processor. It wasn't until three years after inception that the firm started realising profits.
In 1994, the firm opened offices in Tokyo and Silicon Valley. Three years later, Arm broke into the disk drive market by investing in Palmchip Corporation. In 2010, the firm joined forces with five other renowned tech companies to form Linaro, which was a non-profit open-source data engineering firm.
